We’ve created a series of bite-sized blog posts just long enough to give you the downlow on all kinds of digital wizardry, because we love sharing our knowledge and know-how. Get tips for improving your social media efforts, discover powerful PR tricks, and learn all kinds of hacks to make your work life easier. Here is our super quick tip of the week.

What?

Whether you are an advertiser or a private social media user, you can now make longer Instagram videos. Instagram announced at the end of March 2016 that iOS and Android users could now create 60 second Instagram videos.

Furthermore, iOS users can also now make videos out of multiple clips from the camera roll, to look a bit like this:

Why?

Instagram videos are great for a number of reasons. For B2C businesses, the social media platform is an ideal place to show a mix of a fun human side, and business or product images and videos.

Now that Instagram has extended the length of videos up to a maximum of 60 seconds, you can get even more useful content into each one. Obviously silly animal pictures still have their place, but with the option to create longer videos, brands can now showcase new products, answer FAQs, and give previews.

How?

Longer video on Instagram started rolling out at the end of March 2016. Once you have installed the the updated version of the app, you’ll be able to start making (up to) 60 second Instagram straight away!

Multi-clip video is also now available as part of Instagram for iOS version 7.19 in Apple’s App Store. Once installed, this is how you make one:

  • Open the Instagram app.
  • Tap the camera icon.
  • Tap Library at the bottom of the screen and select a video you’d like to upload.
  • Tap Next in the top right, then tap the scissors icon.
  • Tap the + icon at the bottom of the screen.
  • Select any other video clips you’d like to add, then tap Next. At the bottom of the screen, you can tap video clips to trim them, or tap and hold to reorder them. To delete a clip from your video, drag it to the middle of the screen.
  • You can add effects or filters, a caption and your location before sharing. Once you’re done, tap Next.
