Twitter has made a subtle but crucial change to the tweets that appear in your timeline. In place of the original, chronological timeline of tweets, Twitter users now see a new timeline showing “best tweets first”. Twitter’s new algorithmic timeline hasn’t been greeted with the warmest reception. The good news is, there is an option to opt out of this, and revert back to the original chronological timeline. Read on to find out how.

The change to Twitter’s new algorithmic timeline has caused much upset in the Twitter-sphere as it is a step in the Facebook direction. The fact that tweets used to be displayed in chronological order was what really made Twitter stand out from the crowd.

Look closely at the image above and you’ll see the tweets are out of order: here a few tweets from 9-10 hours ago show up before one posted two hours ago.

You control how tweets are displayed in your timeline. To switch Twitter’s new algorithmic timeline off, follow these instructions:

On desktop:

  • Log into your Twitter account.
  • Go to “Settings” > “Account” > “Content”.
  • Under “Timeline”, untick the box next to “Show me the best Tweets first”.

On iOS:

  • In the Twitter app, click on “Me”.
  • Tap the gear icon and select “Settings”.
  • Select the account whose settings you’d like to adjust.
  • Go to “Timeline,” tap “Timeline personalization”.
  • Untick the box next to “Show me the best Tweets first”.

On Android:

  • Tap the overflow icon.
  • Tap “Settings,” then “Timeline”.
  • Untick the box next to “Show me the best Tweets first”.
